Jon Wands is a New Jersey–based guitarist, recording artist, and instructor with over two decades of experience behind the instrument. His path in music began at age five when his father, John Wands—a prominent gigging guitarist in the Carteret, NJ area—introduced him to the basics through piano. When his father passed away when Jon was 12, the quiet loss grew into a deep drive to continue his family's musical legacy.

 

At 15, Jon picked up the electric guitar, cutting his teeth on the classic tracks his father used to play—mastering tunes by Santana, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix. That early spark quickly turned into a dedicated obsession with tone, technique, and fretboard expression.

 

Jon built his foundational stage experience serving as the lead electric guitarist for his local church for eight years, performing weekly Sunday and Wednesday services. That environment forged his ability to adapt on the fly, play dynamically in a full band mix, and connect emotionally with an audience.

 

A defining moment in Jon's musical evolution was studying under guitar legend Steve Vai, culminating in the privilege of sharing the stage with Steve and his band during the final jam of the very first Vai Academy. That experience deeply shaped Jon’s perspective on harmony: he views music as a rich color palette, leveraging modal interchange and harmonic depth to evoke precise emotional responses in the listener.

 

As an educator and performer, Jon spans a wide range of genres—from soaring rock solos and classic covers to expansive ambient soundscapes. In his private teaching studio, he combines structured mechanics with genuine creative freedom, guiding students of all levels toward their own artistic voice. His ultimate goal is to inspire others through music—and help every student, as Steve Vai puts it, "find their note."

 

Off the stage and outside the studio, Jon’s life is anchored by his family, sharing a home with his loving wife and two children. A passionate creative across multiple mediums, he spends his downtime capturing life through photography, admiring fine engineering in sports cars, and perfecting his daily brew as a dedicated coffee aficionado.
